This grape has to be the unsung hero of Patagonia, where Merlot is capable of expressing sublime purity and superb varietal definition. This is a wonderful example with a directness on the nose that screams blueberries, plums and blackcurrants. The texture is super-soft without verging on ‘soupy’, with luscious, velvet-esque tannins and gentle balancing acidity. The wine spends 12 months in used French barrels to give it a little more openness but is otherwise all about the fruit, fruit, fruit! A brilliant introduction to Patagonian Merlot.
