atamisque malbec 2021
Atamisque
The fruit for this modern Malbec Masterpiece comes from vines planted more than 90 years ago in the stunning Uco valley enclave of La Consulta, long enough in the ground to begin to express a very real sense of place, terroir even. The soils here are essentially alluvial with rocky foundations and a sandy top layer, with big lumps of calcareous matter dotted around, almost reminiscent of parts of the Rhône. Stylistically this epitomises Malbec’s journey from plump to pristine over the last 10 – 15 years. Inky purple in appearance, of course, with wonderful top notes of violets and wild herbs on the nose, under-pinned by intense black fruits with hints of tobacco and coffee. The wine is deep and concentrated in every respect but blissfully fresh and elegant. Fermented and aged for 14 months in 100% new French oak barrels, lovely upon release and a wine that will age handsomely for 15 years or more.
