viejas blancas 2019
The fruit for this highly quirky and delicious white is directly pressed into old 500 litre barrels and fermented there with only airborne wild yeasts, using dry ice to keep the juice cool throughout. No nutrients added and no acidity correction, and this is such a delicate wine it was decided to bottle unfiltered and without stabilisation, thus the slightly hazy appearance. 50% Riesling, 50% Pinot Blanc, vines more than 70 years old grown on decomposed granite soils, the wine spends 5 months in second use French oak barrels of 500 litre capacity, only 2,700 bottles produced.
This is lovely, with intriguing bready / tropical notes on the nose underscored with ripe citrus. Broad, round and soft in the mouth with a big silky finish.
