Viña Progreso
Although Albariño was introduced to Uruguay only around 25 years ago, it has shot to local stardom and is making a real show of itself in all the right ways from these low-lying coastal vineyards. A growing number of producers now see Albariño as their great white hope, having emerged with a delicious modern style that has somewhat eclipsed wines made from the likes of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Our brilliant little producer Viña Progreso, with talented young winemaker Gabriel Pisano at the helm, is one such producer making a bright, lively dry white that’s full of energy and pizazz. These relatively young vines are planted high-density / low-yield on clay-calcareous soils at just 100 MASL in a location where coastal proximity is probably the key defining factor and, yes, this wine does have a delicious, subtle saline character amidst its vivacious citrus-laden / peach blossom layers, a note more than vaguely reminiscent of the grape’s Galician contemporaries. Simple fermentation in stainless steel with a combination of natural and selected yeasts, no oak required, a bit of down time in tank, job done. This is high aromatic freshness typified, good to go with fish n chips or something a tad more hi-brow should the consumer so wish
